Breadcrumb Navigation Design

Breadcrumbs show where a page sits in the site hierarchy and give users a quick way back up. They are most useful on deep sites like stores, docs and dashboards.

Inside the example

The live example above is plain HTML with Tailwind utility classes, so you can paste it into any Tailwind project. It uses type sizes text-sm (14px) and spacing gap-2 (8px). Everything sits on a 4px grid, which keeps rhythm consistent when you adapt it.

Colors use Tailwind's neutral stone scale so the pattern stays brand-agnostic. Swap stone-900 for your primary color on the main action, keep body text dark and check contrast after any change.

Anatomy

1.Trail
Links from the top level down to the current page.
2.Separator
A slash or chevron between levels.
3.Current page
Shown as plain text, not a link.

Common variations

  • Location breadcrumbs, showing where a page sits in the hierarchy. The most common and useful type.
  • Attribute breadcrumbs, showing selected filters on ecommerce category pages.
  • Truncated breadcrumbs, collapsing middle levels into an ellipsis on small screens.

States to design

  • Default link: readable, quieter than main content.
  • Hover and focus: underline or color change and a focus ring.
  • Current page: plain text, not a link.
  • Collapsed: ellipsis that expands to reveal hidden levels.

A walkthrough

A shopper arrives from a search engine directly on a product page for linen shirts. Above the product title, a breadcrumb trail reads Home / Women / Shirts / Linen Shirt. Without reading any navigation menu, she understands where she is in the store.

She wants to compare other shirts, so she taps Shirts in the breadcrumb and lands on the category page with all shirts. On her phone, the trail is shortened to a single link back to Shirts, which saves space while keeping the most useful step. Search results also show this path under the page title, because the page includes breadcrumb structured data.

Later she reaches a deeply nested page in the help center: Help / Orders / Returns / International returns. On mobile the middle levels collapse into an ellipsis that expands on tap, so the trail never wraps onto three lines. Screen reader users hear it announced as a breadcrumb navigation list, with separators skipped and the current page identified.

For the content team, the breadcrumb is generated from the same page hierarchy that drives the sitemap and navigation, so when an article moves to a new section, the trail, the structured data and the internal links all update together. That consistency is what keeps breadcrumbs trustworthy for both people and search engines.

How different products use it

Ecommerce stores show category paths like Home / Women / Shoes / Sneakers on product and category pages.

Documentation sites use breadcrumbs to show where a page sits within guides and API references.

Admin tools and file managers show folder or entity paths, often with dropdowns on each level.

Visual design guidelines

Breadcrumbs are usually set at 13 to 14px in a muted color, with the current page in the main text color. Use a simple separator like a slash or chevron with 8px of space on each side. Place them directly above the page title, aligned to the same left edge as the content.

Best practices

Do

  • Show hierarchy, not browsing history.
  • Keep breadcrumbs above the page title.
  • Truncate middle levels on mobile.
  • Add BreadcrumbList structured data on public pages.

Don't

  • Do not use breadcrumbs as the only navigation.
  • Do not make the current page a link.
  • Do not use them on flat, one-level sites.

On mobile

On mobile, long breadcrumb trails wrap or overflow. Show only the parent level with a back-style link, or truncate the middle levels. Keep the tap targets large enough even though breadcrumbs are visually small.

Common mistakes

  • Showing browsing history instead of hierarchy.
  • Making the current page a link.
  • Using breadcrumbs as the only navigation.
  • Tiny tap targets on mobile.

Edge cases to plan for

  • Pages in multiple categories should show the most common path or the one the user came through.
  • Very long names should truncate with full names available on hover and focus.
  • Dynamic paths in apps should update when items are moved or renamed.
  • Right-to-left languages need reversed order and separators.

Accessibility checklist

  • Wrap in a nav with aria-label="Breadcrumb".
  • Use an ordered list for the trail.
  • Mark the current page with aria-current="page".

Implementation notes

Use a nav element with aria-label="Breadcrumb" and an ordered list. Hide separators from assistive technology with aria-hidden, mark the current page with aria-current="page", and add BreadcrumbList structured data so search engines can show the path in results.

In your design system

In a design system, breadcrumbs are a simple component that accepts a list of items, renders separators, marks the last item as current and handles truncation. Generate the structured data from the same list so the visual breadcrumb and the search-engine version never disagree.

How to measure whether it works

Check how often breadcrumbs are clicked. Low usage on deep sites may mean they are too small or poorly placed; high usage suggests users rely on them to move up the hierarchy, so they should be kept consistent.

Pre-launch checklist

Microcopy you can use

StoreHome / Women / Shirts / Linen Shirt
DocsDocs / API / Authentication

A step-by-step design process

  • Map the site hierarchy and confirm it is at least two or three levels deep.
  • Decide the first item: Home or the site name.
  • Choose a separator and hide it from screen readers.
  • Design truncation for long trails and small screens.
  • Add structured data for search engines.
  • Check consistency across every template that shows breadcrumbs.

Usability test tasks

Before shipping, run a short usability test with five or so people from your audience. Give them tasks rather than instructions and watch where they hesitate:

  • Go up one level from a product page.
  • Tell which category this page belongs to.
  • Return to the home page using breadcrumbs.
  • Use the breadcrumbs on a phone.

Key terms

  • Location breadcrumb: A trail that shows where the page sits in the hierarchy.
  • Attribute breadcrumb: A trail of selected filters or attributes.
  • BreadcrumbList: The schema.org type for breadcrumb structured data.
  • Truncation: Hiding middle levels behind an ellipsis to save space.

Writing the copy

Use the same names as the pages themselves so users recognize them. Keep 'Home' or the site name as the first item. Avoid adding descriptive text to breadcrumb labels; they should be short page names.

Prompts to generate variations

If you use an AI UI generator such as Inspo AI, these prompts are a good starting point for exploring variations of this pattern:

  • Design breadcrumb navigation for an ecommerce product page with category path and truncated mobile version.
  • Create documentation breadcrumbs that show section and subsection above the article title.
  • Design file-manager breadcrumbs with dropdowns on each folder level.

Related patterns

Breadcrumbs support the main navbar and in-app sidebar navigation, and they pair naturally with pagination on category pages.

Questions people ask

Do breadcrumbs help SEO?

Yes. They add internal links and, with BreadcrumbList structured data, can show the page path in search results.

Should the current page be a link in breadcrumbs?

No. Show it as plain text and mark it with aria-current="page".

What separator should breadcrumbs use?

A slash or a chevron are both common. Hide separators from screen readers with aria-hidden.

Should breadcrumbs include the home page?

Usually yes, as the first item, labelled Home or with the site name.

Do single-level sites need breadcrumbs?

No. Breadcrumbs help on sites with at least two or three levels of hierarchy.
